Building your own PC saves money and gives you exactly what you need. This guide walks you through every step.
Part 1: Choosing Your Components
Before building, you need the right parts. Here's what to buy:
1. Central Processing Unit (CPU)
- Budget ($100-200): Intel i3-14100, AMD Ryzen 5 8500G
- Mid-range ($200-350): Intel i5-14600K, AMD Ryzen 7 8700G
- High-end ($350-600): Intel i7-14700K, AMD Ryzen 9 7900X
- Enthusiast ($600+): Intel i9-14900K, AMD Ryzen 9 7950X
2. Motherboard
Must match your CPU socket. Intel uses LGA1700/1851. AMD uses AM5.
- Budget: B760 (Intel) or B650 (AMD)
- Mid-range: Z790 (Intel) or B650E (AMD)
- High-end: Z790 (Intel) or X670E (AMD)
3. Memory (RAM)
- Minimum: 16GB DDR5 (two 8GB sticks)
- Recommended: 32GB DDR5 (two 16GB sticks)
- Speed: 6000MHz CL30 is sweet spot
4. Storage (SSD)
- Operating system: 512GB NVMe SSD
- Games/files: 1-2TB NVMe SSD
- Brands: Samsung, WD, Crucial, Sabrent
5. Graphics Card (GPU)
- Budget ($200-350): RTX 4060, RX 7600
- Mid-range ($400-600): RTX 4070, RX 7800 XT
- High-end ($700-1,000): RTX 4070 Ti Super, RX 7900 XT
- Enthusiast ($1,000+): RTX 4080 Super, RTX 4090
6. Power Supply (PSU)
- 650W for budget builds
- 750W for mid-range
- 850W for high-end
- 1000W+ for enthusiast
- Stick with reputable brands: Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, be quiet!
7. Case
- Ensure it fits your motherboard (ATX, micro-ATX, or mini-ITX)
- Good airflow (mesh front panel)
- Popular cases: Fractal Pop Air, Lian Li Lancool 216, Corsair 4000D
Part 2: Tools Needed
- Phillips head screwdriver (magnetic tip recommended)
- Zip ties for cable management
- Thermal paste (CPU cooler usually includes it)
- Flashlight
- Anti-static wrist strap (optional but recommended)
Part 3: Step-by-Step Assembly
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
- Clean, hard surface (kitchen table works)
- Good lighting
- No carpet (static electricity can damage parts)
- Keep screws organized in small containers
Step 2: Install CPU
- Open motherboard CPU socket lever
- Align triangle on CPU with triangle on socket
- Gently place CPU (no force needed)
- Close lever to secure
Step 3: Install RAM
- Open RAM slot clips
- Align notch on RAM with slot
- Press down firmly until clips click
- Use slots 2 and 4 first for dual channel
Step 4: Install M.2 SSD
- Find M.2 slot on motherboard
- Remove heatsink if present
- Insert SSD at 30-degree angle
- Press down and secure with screw
Step 5: Install CPU Cooler
- Apply pea-sized dot of thermal paste
- Mount cooler according to instructions
- Connect fan cable to CPU_FAN header
- Ensure cooler is tight but not over-tightened
Step 6: Prepare Case
- Remove side panels
- Install standoffs for motherboard
- Install power supply
- Route cables through case holes
Step 7: Install Motherboard
- Place I/O shield in case (if not pre-installed)
- Carefully lower motherboard onto standoffs
- Screw in all 6-9 screws (don't over-tighten)
Step 8: Install Graphics Card
- Remove PCIe slot covers from case
- Push PCIe lever down
- Insert GPU firmly into top PCIe x16 slot
- Secure with screws
- Connect power cables from PSU
Step 9: Connect Cables
- 24-pin motherboard power
- 8-pin CPU power (top left of motherboard)
- GPU power (6-pin, 8-pin, or both)
- SATA power for hard drives
- Front panel connectors (power button, reset, USB, audio)
- Fans to fan headers
Step 10: Cable Management
- Use zip ties to bundle cables
- Route behind motherboard tray
- Keep cables away from fans
- Leave some slack for future changes
Part 4: First Boot
- Connect monitor to GPU (not motherboard)
- Connect keyboard and mouse
- Plug in power cable
- Turn on power supply switch
- Press power button
If it doesn't turn on:
- Check power supply switch is ON
- Ensure front panel connectors are correct
- Reseat RAM sticks
- Check all power cables
Part 5: Install Operating System
- Create Windows installation USB (Microsoft website, free)
- Insert USB and boot
- Follow Windows setup
- Install motherboard drivers (from manufacturer website)
- Install GPU driver (NVIDIA or AMD)
- Update Windows
Part 6: Optimize Your New PC
After Windows is installed:
- Run Windows Update repeatedly until no updates remain
- Install your favorite browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
- Install antivirus (Windows Defender is fine)
- Set up backup (external drive or cloud)
- Test all components with benchmarking software
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Not installing I/O shield before motherboard
- Forgetting CPU power cable
- Using wrong screws (can short circuit)
- Over-tightening cooler (can crack CPU)
- Building on carpet (static electricity)
Tools and Resources:
